Sedation dentistry is a method of personalized care for patients who experience dental anxiety. It often employs a group of drugs called benzodiazepines, which reduce anxiety, cause drowsiness, and reduce memory of the procedure.

IV conscious sedation is a technique of sedation dentistry in which your dentist administers the medication through your veins. It is typically inserted through the veins in your arm or hand. A local anesthetic will numb the nerves where the needle is inserted. The initial dose involves a light pinch as it is inserted into the vein, and many say it is virtually painless. Within 30 seconds, you will feel relaxed and less fearful but still able to respond to your surroundings.

The American Society of Anesthesiology notes that IV conscious sedation is different from general anesthesia and that the patient will not be unconscious during IV conscious sedation but rather drowsy and relaxed.

Nitrous oxide sedation, commonly known as "laughing gas," is a mild form of sedation dentistry that helps patients relax during dental procedures. The colorless, odorless gas is mixed with oxygen and administered through a small mask placed over your nose.

Nitrous oxide works quickly to create feelings of euphoria and relaxation while reducing anxiety and pain sensitivity. Unlike deeper forms of sedation, you remain fully conscious and able to communicate with your dental team throughout the procedure. Most patients describe a warm, pleasant sensation of wellbeing, and some may experience mild tingling in their hands and feet. One of the greatest advantages of nitrous oxide is how quickly it leaves your system. Once your procedure is complete, you'll be given pure oxygen to breathe for about 5 minutes, which clears the nitrous oxide from your body. You'll feel normal almost immediately, with no "hangover" effect.

Most patients can drive themselves home and return to their regular activities immediately following treatment, including work or school.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedation is a moderate form of sedation dentistry that involves taking a prescribed medication by mouth before your dental procedure. Most commonly, dentists prescribe medications from the benzodiazepine family, such as Valium, Halcion, or Ativan, which help reduce anxiety, relax muscles, and create a sense of calm.

With oral sedation, you remain conscious throughout your treatment but feel significantly relaxed. Many patients experience a state of deep relaxation where time seems to pass quickly, and they often have limited memory of the procedure afterward. This "amnesia effect" is beneficial for patients with dental phobia as it helps prevent the formation of additional negative memories.

The American Dental Association notes that oral sedation provides a moderate level of sedation that helps many patients receive necessary dental care they might otherwise avoid.

Your dentist will review your medical history and current medications to ensure oral sedation is safe for you. You'll receive a prescription with instructions on when to take the medication, typically about an hour before your appointment. You must arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment, as you will not be able to drive while under the effects of the medication.

You may be instructed to avoid eating for a few hours before your appointment, and your dentist will provide specific preparation guidelines.

After your procedure, you may feel drowsy for several hours. It's common to feel relaxed and sometimes slightly unsteady on your feet. The full effects of oral sedation typically wear off within 24 hours, though you may feel tired for the remainder of the day.

You should plan to rest at home after your appointment and avoid operating machinery, making important decisions, or returning to work until the following day.

Oral sedation may not be suitable for patients with certain medical conditions, those taking specific medications, pregnant women, or those with severe respiratory problems.
